Now is a great time to be involved with IMF Yoga

Misconceptions:

  • You have to be flexible.
  • Yoga is just stretching.
  • Yoga is only for women.

Truth:

Yoga means “to yoke” or “to join.” Yoga first appeared in ancient texts more than 5,000 years ago. However, modern “Western” yoga, primarily found in fitness clubs and yoga studios, is generally based in the Hatha Yoga tradition. Hatha Yoga focuses on a blend of physical postures (asanas) and movements (vinyasa), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation. Depending on an instructor’s background and training, different Hatha Yoga traditions place different emphasis on the various aspects of asana, pranayama, and meditation as well as incorporate other yogic principles and lifestyle teachings. Hence, the concept that yoga is a “union” of the mind, body, and spirit.

Benefits:

More and more people, especially the Westerners, are resorting to Yoga to find relief for chronic health problems and attain a peace of mind. Both men and women are discovering the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of Yoga. Some the health benefits of Yoga include:

  • increases strength, flexibility, and muscle tone
  • lubricates the joints and improves range-of-motion
  • improves posture and alignment
  • releases tension and reduces stress
  • improves concentration
  • increases body and mental awareness
  • reduces the symptoms of chronic pain, disease, and medical conditions

The deep and controlled breathing techniques associated with yoga work to:

  • relax the body
  • reduce stress
  • improves oxygen supply to the body
  • increases detoxification
  • minimizes anxiety
  • improves physical and mental health
  • promotes overall personal well-being

In addition, we offer Yoga Workshops and Specialty Yoga Classes that provide opportunities for focused study on the practices and teachings of Yoga.

New to Yoga?

No need to worry; there are beginners in every class. The best classes to begin your Yoga practices are the Gentle Yoga, Yoga Basics, and Level 1. No matter your age or physical condition - Yoga is for EVERY BODY.

Yoga Studio Etiquette:

  • Bring a yoga mat to class (for hygiene reasons). If you do not have one, rental mats are available at the front desk for $3. You can purchase your own mat, in just about any store in town (Target, Wal-Mart, Raleys, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Sports Ltd. etc.).
  • Please arrive a few minutes prior to class. If class has already started, enter quietly, remove your shoes and socks (there are cubbies outside the studio doors). Please do not walk on wood floor with shoes.
  • Inform the instructor of all injuries, medical issues, or if you are pregnant. This will allow us to give modifications of poses to meet your needs.
  • Wear comfortable, layered clothing that allows for freedom of movement.
  • Do not eat a large meal at least 1-2 hours prior to class. If you are prone to low-blood sugar, eat something light and healthy about 30 minutes before class.  No chewing gum please.
